Prototyping is a much-used word in the world of innovation. From cars to gaming, from housing to energy systems, it is a way of testing something ‘original’ and different from the prevailing paradigm. To find the new next thing…
This week I have been thinking about what this means to me and what we are attempting to do (our focus is on working with Mindset & Culture). For me this is about re-invention or renewal of the FCA community to become a global innovation influencer. I passionately want to create a thriving, diverse and vibrant community, where people test, learn and exchange pioneering innovation approaches. I have had to ask myself a very simple question…
“if we have not achieved the results we wanted (after 8 years) …then we have to examine why?
I think there is a process forming here, to me it looks something like this…
Observations- What have experienced innovation practioners been most challenged with? ...and what is the key barrier to re-invention or productive progress?
Research… What has the research illuminated? ...it has shown us that the biggest barrier to innovation practice is Mindset and Culture – this has been a challenge for a number of years (if not always)
Prototype– We are trying a new approach that we hope will help us to change our results and find the next new version of the FCA
Apply –We have been asked to take different actions (to our normal approaches) and examine the results - testing new ways to see, think and feel about our challenge.
Review and learn – Over this 1st cycle what will be the outcome? We will be reflecting on what has been done differently and most importantly, what have I learnt and how to use this to improve?
How to work with my own Mindset– we have been Archetypally coached for only 30mins a week and I have found this amazingly inspiring.
Unconscious bias- has been revealed in an easy and conversational way. Hugely helpful! – this helps me to become more resourceful to try new things.
Cognitive Dissonance– has become very real this week. The act of saying one thing and doing another. It simply takes someone to show you your unconscious choices “how does what you are currently doing reflect what you agreed to do?”… sounds simple and I think it is. It is like I can hear myself and I have to be prepared to listen.
Fear– seems to be a key barrier, this is the territory of Mindset and Culture…I think this is to do with loss of status, not knowing the answers, loss control…maybe? Yet I am driven to explore and discover what I don’t yet know.
“Failure is only available to those who believe they are right”
My Learning– failure seems to depend on how invested weare in what we think is right. I for one am enjoying this journey and whatever the 45days outcome will be…I have already learnt some great new things and I am now beginning to consider this …
Interesting experiment - I have learnt something of value for the future
Offers deeper insights – I now want to apply more and develop this further
